With Hans Kesting and Marieke Heebink in the leading roles, Oedipus was unanimously praised by press and audiences alike. The production was selected for the Nederlands Theater Festival and made a great impression at the Edinburgh International Festival. Critics praised above all Icke's innovative handling of classical repertoire and the company's powerful acting.

The production also proved an important international breakthrough for Robert Icke and his collaboration with Toneelgroep Amsterdam. After its success in the Netherlands and at international festivals, Icke made an English-language remake for the West End in London. That production grew into a great success and later travelled on to Broadway in New York. More than 150,000 visitors worldwide have now seen a version of this production, originally made for Toneelgroep Amsterdam.
