About the Bookshop
Small room, big ambitions
Walking across Leidseplein, you suddenly find yourself in front of the glass doors of The Bookshop. On one side, the bustle of the city; on the other, a warm, intimate room you can simply step into. Welcome to The Bookshop: small in size, big in ambition, and open to anyone who's curious.
The Bookshop is the smallest stage in the Stadsschouwburg Amsterdam: a soft-pink front room for the city's culture, curated by the programmers of Internationaal Theater Amsterdam (ITA).
It's the place to land for a new story, an absorbing conversation or a different point of view.
A dream made real by 500 donors
At the start of Amsterdam 750, the city's anniversary year, we had a dream: alongside our two main theatres in the Stadsschouwburg, a small, intimate stage of our own. More than 500 donors made that dream come true. A crowdfunding campaign raised €30,000 for theatre lighting, sound equipment and a mobile stage.
Almost 200 events and countless remarkable encounters later, The Bookshop is doing exactly what we once dreamed it would. And it still relies on the extraordinary support of its visitors, on donations and on grants from foundations.
