The production stood out for its use of live cameras and a cinematic acting style that would later become characteristic of many productions by Van Hove and Toneelgroep Amsterdam. Theatre and cinema flowed together into a single experience in which audiences could follow the actors at close quarters.
 

Opening Night grew into an international audience favourite. Since its premiere the production has played to sold-out houses in Paris, New York, Melbourne and Vienna, among other cities, and contributed to the company's international reputation.
