Hamlet vs Hamlet

Hamlet vs Hamlet was the first of several successful collaborations between Toneelgroep Amsterdam and Toneelhuis in Antwerp. In this ambitious co-production, director Guy Cassiers and writer Tom Lanoye reimagined Shakespeare’s classic tragedy for a contemporary audience. Shifting the focus away from political power struggles, they explored the young Hamlet’s search for identity and sense of self.

With a powerful cast drawn from the ensembles of Toneelhuis and Toneelgroep Amsterdam, and an impressive Abke Haring in the title role, Hamlet was portrayed as an adolescent caught between idealism, doubt and the expectations of the adult world.

The production was selected for both Het Theaterfestival (Belgium) and the Nederlands Theater Festival and grew into a widely praised highlight within Guy Cassiers's body of work and within the history of Toneelgroep Amsterdam.
