At the centre of this large-scale family epic is a secret carried down through the generations. Van Hove turned Couperus's novel not into a costume drama but into a contemporary production about families, guilt and the question of whether anyone can ever really free themselves from their past. In doing so he showed once again how topical Couperus's themes still are, more than a century after they first appeared.
 

The production was selected for both the Nederlands Theater Festival and the Vlaams Theaterfestival and was seen on international stages, including the Festival d'Avignon. Critics praised above all the strength of the company and the compelling acting of Abke Haring and Katelijne Damen, among others.
